Why Are Walnuts Healthy?
Walnuts are the only nut that is very high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Most New Yorkers are not getting enough Omega 3s in their diet. This is critical because Omega 3s help protect brain cells from daily inflammation. Eating an anti-inflammatory diet not only protects brain health but also helps people feel better every day.
What Is Jerk Salmon?
Jerk is a traditional Caribbean spice blend that includes cumin, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, thyme, allspice, and more. Eating spices is good for the brain because spices are rich in anti-inflammatory nutrients. When we combine spices with Omega 3s from salmon, we get a very anti-inflammatory meal, known as the Jerk Salmon.
What is a Legume?
Legumes are edible seeds that grow in pods of certain plants. Common examples of legumes are soybeans, lentils, and peas. Legumes are very high in fiber and are an excellent, plant-based source of protein. Because they are seeds, they are also very vitamin and mineral-rich.
Are Peanuts Considered A Nut?
No! Peanuts are actually a legume, just like soybeans, and lentils. Peanuts are edible seeds that grow in pods. Despite that, most people still think of peanuts as tree nuts such as walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts. Like all legumes, peanuts are a rich source of fiber and plant-based protein.
What Is Raw Honey?
Raw Honey is harvested straight from the honeycomb, without ever going through any processing. That’s important because when honey is processed, such as when it’s heated, the special nutrients in honey can lose their benefit. Besides being full of intact nutrients, raw honey also contains nutritious things like bee pollen. Since raw honey is filtered, it’s safe to eat straight from the source!
What Is Labneh?
Labneh is made from plain yogurt (fermented milk) that is strained for several hours to remove all the moisture. It has a consistency similar to whipped cream cheese and can be consumed raw or cooked into dishes. Labneh is a fermented food. Fermented foods are important for brain health because they contain pre- and probiotics, which promote the growth of health-giving bacteria in our digestive system.
What Is Grass-Fed Beef?
Grass-Fed Beef is made from cows that are raised on grass, instead of grain. Grain is an artificial diet for cows that can change the natural flavor of beef. When cows mostly eat grass, not only are they more tasty, but they also absorb more Omega 3. So eating grass-fed beef is a delicious way to increase Omega 3 intake.
What Spices Do You Use?
We use a medley of spices including Paprika, Cayenne Pepper, Coriander, Cumin, Fennel Seeds, Garlic Powder, Turmeric, Allspice, Cardamom, Cinnamon, and more. We love spices because they are flavorful and proven to improve human health.
What Is Free Range Chicken?
Free Range Chicken comes from a farming method which allows chickens to walk freely within an area instead of being confined to one area. When chickens are allowed to roam free, they get more variety in their diet. More variety in their diet translates into tastier and more nutritious meat. Also, because free-range chickens have lower levels of stress hormones, they are happier and healthier.
What Is In Our Granola?
Our Granola includes Oats, Raw Honey, Walnuts, Coconut Flakes, Dried Cranberries, Golden Raisins, Pumpkin Seeds, Golden Flaxseeds, Dark Chocolate Chips, Dried Pineapple, Coconut Oil, Vanilla Extract. As you can see, at HB, we love whole grains, nuts, seeds and spices. Granola is a great way to get all of these in one bite.
What Is Quinoa?
Even though most people think of quinoa as a whole grain, it’s actually an edible seed. Seeds are very good for the body because plants tend to store a lot of their nutrients within the seed. Also, because quinoa comes in a variety of colors (like black, red, yellow and white), it’s a rich source of nutrients known as color pigments. Quinoa is a superfood because it’s particularly rich not only in nutrients but also plant-based protein and fiber. Unlike most plant-based proteins, quinoa is a complete protein, which means it contains all nine essential amino acids that our body cannot make on its own. It’s also naturally gluten-free and can be eaten safely by people with gluten intolerance or celiac disease.
What Is An Omega-3?
Omega-3 fatty acids, also known as “healthy fats,” are essential nutrients that our body can’t produce on its own. Omega-3 fats have a special structure that gives them anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-3s can be found in seafood (salmon being one of the best sources) and also in seeds and nuts (such as walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds).
What Do Omega-3’s Do?
Omega-3 fatty acids help the cells in your body function because our bodies incorporate the Omega 3s from our diet into every single cell membrane. The special structure of Omega 3s helps the cell membranes be more flexible, which improves health on a cellular level. Because our nervous system is made up mostly of fat, Omega-3s are highly concentrated in our eyes and brain. When it comes to Omega 3s, we are what we eat!
What Is An Omega-3 Egg?
Omega-3 Eggs are made from chickens whose feed is supplemented with an Omega-3 source, such as flax seeds. Omega-3 eggs also have five times the amount of omega-3s as conventional eggs. Chickens who are supplemented with Omega-3 also produce lower levels of an inflammatory fatty acid known as arachidonic acid, of which most people consume too much.
Why Are Pistachios Healthy For Your Brain?
Pistachios are special for our health because of their vibrant green and yellow colors. Because they are colorful, pistachios are one of the only nuts that contain the anti-inflammatory color pigments lutein and zeaxanthin (known as carotenoids). Carotenoids can cross into the brain, where they have positive effects on brain blood flow! People who get more carotenoids in their diet tend to have better cognitive performance.
What Is A Fermented Food?
A fermented food is any food that is created by allowing controlled growth of beneficial bacteria. The bacteria convert the food into healthier or tastier components. Some well known fermented foods are kombucha, sauerkraut, kimchi and sourdough bread.
What Do Fermented Foods Do For Your Health?
Fermented foods contain nutrients that feed the healthy bacteria in our digestive system (“the microbiome”). When we eat fermented foods, the microbiome becomes healthier. A healthy microbiome is critical for brain health because the microbiome absorbs nutrients from our food and also sends health-promoting messages directly to the brain!
Is Your Chicken Schnitzel Fried?
No! The Chicken Schnitzel is baked, not fried. Nothing at Honeybrains is fried because frying changes the chemical structures of fats. Eating healthy fats is a staple of a brain-healthy diet.
